What the Drainfield Does
The tank separates solids from liquid. The drainfield does the treatment. Effluent leaves the tank, distributes through perforated pipe, and percolates down through soil where bacteria break down remaining contaminants before the water reaches groundwater.
That last part matters more in Florida than most places. Groundwater supplies roughly 90 percent of Florida’s drinking water. The distance between your drainfield and the water table is not a technicality — it is the treatment.
The Water Table Problem
Effluent needs unsaturated soil beneath the drainfield to be treated properly. Where the seasonal high water table sits close to the surface, that treatment zone shrinks or disappears.
Across much of South Florida, the coast, and low-lying interior, the seasonal high water table sits within 24 inches of the surface. In those conditions a conventional in-ground drainfield often cannot be permitted, and a mound or elevated drainfield is required instead — building the treatment zone up above natural grade. That adds $5,000–$15,000.
There is also a technical detail worth knowing if you are dealing with a nitrogen-reducing system: where at least 24 inches of separation exists between the bottom of the drainfield and the wet season water table, the drainfield’s own treatment counts toward the 65 percent nitrogen reduction standard. Where less separation is permitted for certain repairs, the treatment unit itself must achieve the full 65 percent before discharge. That distinction changes which products qualify.

Sandy Soil Cuts Both Ways
Florida’s sandy soils percolate readily, which is why conventional systems work well across much of North Florida and the Panhandle. But water that moves through quickly also spends less time in contact with treating bacteria. Very rapid percolation can mean inadequate treatment before effluent reaches groundwater, which is why setback and separation requirements exist.
Karst: The Central Florida Complication
The karst corridor running through Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, and parts of Marion County sits on limestone that dissolves over time, creating voids, conduits, and sinkholes. Two consequences for drainfields.
First, geotechnical assessment may be required before installation, adding cost and time. Second, karst creates direct pathways to the aquifer — water can travel from surface to groundwater with far less filtration than normal soil provides. That is a large part of why the springs protection rules exist in this region.

Do I Need a Nitrogen-Reducing System?
Florida requires enhanced nutrient-reducing systems (ENR-OSTDS) in areas where waterbodies are already impaired. These cost substantially more than a conventional system, and the rules changed in ways that surprise a lot of homeowners — including on repairs.
